(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police, say a woman who reported she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint last month - admitted the story was made up.
The 22-year-old woman told police that at approximately 3:08 a.m. on November 17, an unknown light-skinned black male armed with a gun forced his way into her apartment at Brownstone Terrace on East 14th Street, had forced his way into her bedroom, sexually assaulted her and then fled.
"Based on the seriousness of the alleged incident, we dedicated extensive resources to fully investigate it," BPD Captain Joe Qualters said Friday in a press release. "The investigation revealed that the incident did not happen as reported, and it is important for us to let the community know in an effort to alleviate the fear and anxiety it caused."
Later on November 17, Bloomington police released a composite sketch of the alleged attacker to the media, and a male who believed he met the suspect's description contacted police within a few days, according to the press release.
The man told detectives that he knew the complainant, and was invited into her residence on the night of the alleged incident. He told police and that they had been arguing over money earlier that day, and the man provided police with evidence of text messages sent before and after his visit to support his claims.
In a follow-up interview with the woman, she admitted that she made up the story and that the man neither forced himself into her apartment nor raped her.
Police say the woman provided police with three different accounts of how the incident allegedly occurred, and is somewhat evasive regarding the reported monetary dispute.
The prosecutor's office had not decided as of Friday afternoon whether to file charges of false reporting against the woman.
