(BEDFORD) - An early morning fire destroyed a pole barn in the 80 block of April Sounds Addition early Tuesday morning.
"The weather conditions made it difficult," says Shawswick Volunteer Fire Chief Luke Klunder. "The road conditions were bad and the freezing temperatures made the water we put on the fire freeze, causing the area to get very slick."
When firefighters arrived at 1:20 a.m. the fire was shooting out of the roof of the garage. Firefighters from Shawswick, Pleasant Run and Guthrie went into a defensive mode attempting to keep the fire from spreading. TOPES also responded to provide warm beverages and support.
"We do know there was a heat source inside the barn," Klunder added. "He had a wood burning stove. We believe that is where the fire started, but the cause is still under investigation.
The area got really slick so Klunder requested the county highway to bring out some sand.
"They couldn't do that because April Sounds is a private addition and not under the county's control," Klunder says.
Add the freezing water to snow covered roads because they had not been plowed and it created treacherous conditions.
"It got slick on us fast with water going everywhere," Klunder added.
Firefighters were on the scene until after 4 a.m.
The barn was destroyed, Klunder says.
"There was a vehicle and other equipment inside the barn along with numerous other items," he added.
The fire rekindled at 9:01 a.m. Tuesday morning. Shawswick VFD responded.
