(BEDFORD) - Dr. Alan Smith, Lawrence County Health Officer, has found and declared that a public health emergency exists in Lawrence County.
Lawrence County is the latest in Indiana to have been declared a public health emergency.
Dr. Smith made the declaration Thursday in response to an outbreak of hepatitis C.
Hepatitis C is often spread through sharing of needles.
Dr. Smith declared the following:
1. There is an epidemic of Hepatitis C (HCV) in the county;
2. The primary mode of transmission of Hepatitis C in the county is through intravenous drug use; and
3. A syringe exchange program is medically appropriate as part of a comprehensive public health response.
The information supporting the findings of this declaration will be presented in an appropriate forum, to be announced at a later date.
