(LINTON) - Karen Morris of Linton claimed the Powerball ticket worth $50,000. The ticket was bought December 23 at the Casey’s in Linton.
Morris presented the winning ticket to Hoosier Lottery officials December 30.
Morris said she never buys the Powerball tickets, but she needed to pick one up for her adult son's stocking and also purchased one for herself.
"I don't buy Powerball as a rule. To me, the Powerball is too big of a chance. I buy Hoosier Lottery once a week. I was thinking of buying a Powerball for my son's stocking, so I bought one for myself as a reminder," Morris told the Greene County Daily World.
Morris said she checked her ticket after seeing a news story posted on Facebook about a $50,000 winner being purchased at Casey's the same day she had bought her own ticket. She checked her lottery ticket to find she was the winner.
"I didn't check it until after Christmas. I kept thinking, my God, if I had checked it before Christmas those grandbabies would have an even better Christmas," Morris added.
Morris, who has been retired since 2000, said she plans on using the money to "pay some bills and go shopping."
She previously worked at Glenburn Nursing Home for more than 20 years, then at Linton Nursing and Rehabilitation the last five years before retiring.
Another $50,000 ticket was purchased in Terre Haute. Patrick Hart, of Terre Haute, got a big surprise after recently returning from overseas with the Army National Guard.
The Hoosier Lottery press release said the 21-year-old purchased the ticket December 19 at Maui Stop and Shop on Seventh Street.
Hart returned from a nine-month tour of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan on Halloween.
The lifelong resident of Terre Haute said his initial reaction to winning was disbelief and shock.
Betsy Gutierrez, with Hoosier Lottery Public Relations, said there is still a ticket outstanding which was purchased in Terre Haute. The $100,000 Powerball winner with Power Play was purchased December 26 at the Circle K on Wabash Avenue.
The December 26 winning numbers were: 27-40-44-59-65 PB: 20. The Power Play was 2.
The winner should sign the back immediately and contact Hoosier Lottery Customer Service at 1-800-955-6886.
