(SALEM) - A Salem man was arrested this morning in connection to the fatal hit and run accident on State Road 56, early Sunday morning.
Police arrested 22-year-old Derek Deaton of North Canton Road in Salem on charges of leaving the scene of a accident resulting in death, a level 5 felony and was taken to the Washington County Jail.
Deaton was arrested after police received a tip that led them to Deaton.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin, 70-year-old Mitchell Lovins of Scottsburg died of massive trauma to his body after being hit by Deaton's 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup.
According to police, Lovins was traveling west on State Road 56 near Quaker Lane when his minivan slid of the roadway. Police say it appears Lovins left his vehicle and started to walk east on State Road 56 when he was struck by Deaton's pickup.
