(BEDFORD) - Salvation Army Capt. Donna Rose says the men’s warming center is now open.
The center opened this week and is located at the Salvation Army headquarters at 17th and K streets.
The warming center opens at 5 p.m. each day. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. If no one shows up by 8 p.m., the center closes. A note on the door directs men who show up after 8 p.m. to the Bedford Police Department one block away to seek assistance.
The center can provide housing for 10 men. Each is provided a hot meal, a place to shower and sleep. In the morning, the men will eat breakfast and will be given a sack lunch and then must leave for the day to look for employment. They also will receive a bus token to get to and from the center.
Volunteers staff and prepare meals. Area churches provide necessities. A grant from the Lawrence County Community Foundation paid for socks and underwear.
Rose is looking for standby volunteers to step in when regular volunteers are unable to help. They also need baked goods to serve with meals. They can be dropped off at the warming center. To volunteer, call the Salvation Army at (812) 275-5429.
