(BEDFORD) - Ben Wray is the elementary champion of the 42nd Annual Lawrence County Spelling Bee.
Wray, a fifth grader at Fayetteville Elementary, took the title by spelling the word "severe" correctly.
Alexandra Shepherd, a fourth grader at Burris Elementary, spelled "embarrass" to claim second place.
Taking third, with the correct spelling of "sheriff", was Quentin Voigtschild, a fourth grader at Lawrence County Home Schoolers.
Wray will now compete Tuesday afternoon against middle school contestants for the title of Overall Spelling Bee Champion.
Competition will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Schafer Auditorium.
The event, hosted by 1340 AM WBIW, is free to attend.
If you can't attend, the event will be broadcast on 1340 AM WBIW at 6:30 p.m. It will also be streamed online at WBIW.com.
The overall Spelling Bee champion will receive a $100 savings scholarship provided by Bedford Federal Savings Bank and a pizza party, provided by Marcos Pizza, for their homeroom class.
The Champion will then advance to the 2016 Derby Festival Spelling Bee on March 5 at the Kentucky Center for The Arts.
