(WASHINGTON) - A Daviess County escaped inmate was captured Saturday morning after the Daviess County Strategic Response Unit surrounded a Washington home.
Police arrested 23-year-old Shane Michael Alan Cates of Washington without incident.
According to Daviess County Sheriff Jerry Harbstriet, police received a lead around 10 p.m. Friday that Cates was in town.
Officers had just missed Cates when they received a second call around 4 a.m. reporting that he was at a Washington residence.
Authorities are not releasing all of the details on the arrest because the incident is still under investigation and more arrests are possible.
Sheriff Harbstriet says when officers entered the home they found Cates and a shotgun. But Cates was unable to get to the weapon, which police say was unloaded.
Cates had been in the Daviess County Security Center since December when he was arrested for two counts of assault. While at the jail he swallowed two small ink pens and was taken to the Daviess Community Hospital.
That is when he broke out a window in a second floor bathroom, ran along the roof and jumped to the ground. Police dogs tracked him to Memorial Avenue near 11th Street, where he got into a vehicle and escaped.
Both investigators from the Sheriff's Department and Washington Police Department ran down leads and got close to capturing Cates, but he would slip away.
"We were on his tail the entire week," Sheriff Harbstriet says. "Our guys showed a lot of determination and dedication. They found him and when it came time to arrest him, they brought him in with no one getting injured."
Cates was booked into the Daviess County jail and now faces an additional count of escape and other charges.
