(AVOCA) - Lawrence County Police officers were called to the Avoca area Tuesday after reports of an escapee from Daviess County possibly being in Lawrence County.
"But none of those tips panned out," Sheriff Mike Branham says.
Police were looking for 23-year-old Shane Michael Allen Cates.
The Daviess County Sheriff's Department reported Cates was taken from the jail Monday night after he allegedly swallowed a pen and was taken to a Washington hospital for treatment.
Daviess Community Hospital contacted the sheriff's department at 10:54 p.m. to report that Cates of Washington had escaped through a second story window at the hospital.
Officers searched the area but were unable to locate Cates.
Cates was booked into the jail December 22 on a charge of felony battery causing injury.
Cates is 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
Lawrence County police received a call at 12:25 p.m. reporting he was spotted at the Circle K at 14th and Lincoln Avenue and had left in a gold Impala and possibly going to a home in the Avoca area.
Then at 3:04 p.m. police received a call Cates was at a home on Avoca Eureka Road. They received a second call reporting the same at 4:20 p.m.
Officers responded to the area but were unable to locate Cates.
