Compass Creative Dramatics Offering Week-Long Theatre Camp

Last updated on Monday, March 21, 2016

(MITCHELL) - Peter Pan and his cast of Lost Boys, mermaids, fairies and pirates will invade the Opera House when Compass Creative Dramatics returns to Mitchell with a week-long theatre camp for youths.

In October, the Compass Creative Dramatics crew, hailing from Chicago, brought the "Wizard of Oz" to the Opera House with great success as dozens of youths lined up for parts in the famed production.

Now, children in first through 12th grade, are invited to take a trip to Neverland with its "Peter Pan" production April 11-16.

Compass Creative Dramatics is an educational theatre company that specializes in bringing week-long theatre experiences like this to kids across the United States, and will guide students from auditions to performance in just five days with the help of two professional actor/educators. The troupe of actors, which has brought several theatre programs to Lawrence County in recent years, features Bedford native Cassandra Quinn.

During the upcoming camp, students will create their own original choreography and learn about scene writing, costume design and other elements of a theatrical production team.

In this original modern adaptation of "Peter Pan," the curious Darling children befriend a mysterious boy from a distant planet called Neverland. When this happens, they never dream that they'll soon be fighting alongside him, battling injustices and turning the delicate balance of the faraway world on its head.

Public showcases of "Peter Pan" are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on April 15 and 1 p.m. on April 16 at the Opera House. The cost for attendees to watch the productions is $6 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12.

For information or to register a child to participate in the week-long script development program, contact Alyssa Prince at (812) 849-4447 or send an email to aprince@hoosieruplands.org.

Thanks to funding by the Indiana Arts Commission, there is no charge for youths to participate in the program. However, the deadline to register a child is April 6.
