Indiana State Forests To Host Open Houses

(UNDATED) - People interested in how Indiana’s State Forests operate can share their views at a series of open houses starting this month.

Throughout the year, open houses will be held at the following state forests (SF) and state recreation areas (SRA): Clark SF/Deam SRA, Ferdinand SF, Greene-Sullivan SF, Harrison-Crawford SF, Jackson-Washington SF/Starve Hollow SRA, Martin SF, Morgan-Monroe/Yellowwood SF, Owen-Putnam SF, Pike SF, Salamonie River/Frances Slocum SF and Selmier SF.

At each event, the DNR Division of Forestry will provide information about recreational activities, major projects, forest resource management and planning. Attendees can talk directly with DNR personnel or submit written comments. Some open houses will include a tour of facilities or a woods walk.

"These open houses provide Hoosiers with a chance to receive first-hand information about how state forests provide diverse wildlife habitat, forest products and recreational opportunities," State Forester John Seifert said. "They also allow us to receive valuable feedback from our neighbors and users about state forest management. I encourage everyone who has an interest to participate."

Events and open houses are (all times are Eastern):

Martin State Forest, Saturday, March 12, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Martin County Ag Day at the Martin County Community Building at the fairgrounds in Loogootee, (812) 247-3491.
Morgan-Monroe/Yellowwood state forests, Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Training Center at Morgan-Monroe State Forest. The Training Center is off State Road 37, approximately 6 miles south of Martinsville, (765) 342-4026.
Owen-Putnam State Forest, Wednesday, April 13, 3 to 7 p.m. at the property office. The office is 5 miles west of Spencer and less than 1 mile north of State Road 46, (812) 829-2462.
Jackson-Washington State Forest/Starve Hollow SRA, Tuesday, May 17, 3 to 6 p.m., at the Starve Hollow Forest Education Center. The Education Center is off State Road 235, approximately 2 miles southeast of Vallonia, (812) 358-3464. A forester-led tour of the property will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Greene-Sullivan State Forest, Thursday, June 16, 2 to 6 p.m., at the property office. The office is on State Road 159, approximately 1.5 miles south of Dugger, (812) 648-2810.
Selmier State Forest will have a booth set up at the Jennings County Fair, July 11-16. The fair is on State Road 3, approximately 3.5 miles north of North Vernon. Please contact the property for the days and times the booth will be manned, (812) 346-2286.
Clark State Forest/Deam Lake SRA, Friday, Sept.16, 3 to 6 p.m., at the Deam Lake Forest Education Center. The Education Center is off State Road 60, approximately 5 miles east of Borden, (812) 246-5421. A tour of the recreation facilities (campground, cabins, horse barns, etc.) will be available.
Harrison-Crawford State Forest, Thursday, Sept. 22, 3 to 7 p.m., at the property office. The office is off State Road 462, just past the gatehouse for O'Bannon Woods State Park, (812) 738-7694.
Pike State Forest, Wednesday, Sept. 28, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the Pike SF shelter house. The shelter house is off State Road 364, approximately 3.5 miles southeast of Winslow, (812) 367-1524.
Ferdinand State Forest, Thursday, Sept. 29, 3 to 7 p.m., at the property office. The office is off State Road 264, approximately 4 miles northeast of Ferdinand, (812) 367-1524. A forester-led tour of the property will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Salamonie River/Frances Slocum State Forest, Thursday, Oct. 26, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Salamonie River SF office. The office is off State Road 524, approximately 6 miles east of Wabash, (260) 468-2125.
