(BLOOMINGTON) - Sears at the College Mall and Sears Auto center will close by mid-June.
The store will remain open to the public until an unspecified date in the middle of June.
Plans have been made for a liquidation sale starting on March 25 and will remain open until an unspecified date in mid-June.
The store, which has been in the mall since March 1965, and auto center currently employee 52 workers. Full-time workers will be eligible for severance pay and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.
Customers with store credit can have those funds transferred. Sears gift cards are accepted at all locations and don't expire. Those with layaway will be transferred to another location.
The store will continue to operate its normal hours: Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 12-6 p.m.
Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings, wrote in an email the closing is part of a series of actions taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust asset base and accelerate the transformation of their business model.
The building has a new occupant - Whole Foods grocery. The firm is tearing down the building and building a new facility which will open in the fall of 2017.
