(BLOOMINGTON) - More than 170 people were ticketed between Thursday and Saturday in Bloomington during the Little 500 weekend.
Besides the normal drinking violations, two college students were involved in sexual activities on a couch on the front lawn of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house.
Police stayed busy, ticketing people for illegal possession and consumption, mostly due to underage drinking. Tom Rhodes of Community Corrections says 177 people were ticketed between Thursday and Sunday. Rhodes says 110 people were ticketed last year.
Helping keep the streets safe were IU Police Department, Bloomington Police Department, Indiana State Police and Excise officers.
Because so many of the offenders were from out of town, the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office offers an abbreviated version of the pretrial diversion program for Little 500 weekend.
Monroe County prosecutor Chris Gaal says each offender was required to show up at the Monroe County Justice Building at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, pay a $428 fee and do community service all afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium. That evening they were ordered to attend a marijuana and alcohol education class. If they completed the tasks the charges were dismissed.
If offenders chose to not accept the pretrial diversion offer, they are required to appear in court.
