(EAST OOLITIC) - Old semi tractor tires in an abandoned home made it difficult for volunteer firefighters to extinguish a house fire in East Oolitic early this morning.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze in the 300 block of Farmer Street just after midnight.
When firefighters arrived the older home was fully engulfed in flames.
"We had to call in extra tankers because the home, which was being used for storage, was full of semi tires and other items," says Bob Brown, of Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department.
Battling the blaze were firefighters from Shawswick, Oolitic and Marshall VFDs.
"There was also a semi and mobile home pretty close to the house fire," Brown says. "But we were able to keep the fire contained and neither were damaged."
The home, owned by the Johnson family, was destroy.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
"There was no electricity to the house," Brown added. "So we are not sure what ignited the fire. Firefighters will be back on the scene later today to see what they can determine."
Also assisting at the scene was TOPES Lawrence County and Oolitic Police officers and an IU Health Hospital ambulance.
