(BEDFORD) - A loud explosion was followed by an eruption of flames at a home at 607 Hayes Road around 11 a.m. Monday.
The home is owned by James Lane.
Chad Barrett, who was working on a neighboring home, heard the explosions and called 911. He then helped two adults and a child escape the burning home.
Marshall, Indian Creek, Oolitic and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments rushed to the scene.
Bartett then grabbed a water hose from the home he was working on, while Aaron Kenney, who had been in the burning home, grabbed his. The two men hooked the hoses together and Barrett began spraying the back of the home in hopes of putting the fire out.
When firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke bellowing from the attic area at the rear of the home.
Marshall VFD Chief Jason Martin believes the fire started in that area, but the cause is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
