(BEDFORD) - If you’re a kid who likes to fish, or know a kid who might, the Hoosier National Forest invites you to the Kids Fishing Derby and Outdoor Day at the Maumee Boy Scout Camp on Saturday, May 14.
The fishing derby is a free, local event for families. The theme of the event is to get kids hooked on fishing. Fishing poles, lunch, bait, and prizes will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear.
Steve Harriss, coordinator of the event said, "We encourage kids to come out and learn about fishing, as a bonus, they may just catch a lot of fish!" Awards are given for the most fish caught and the biggest fish caught for each age group. While Harriss can't promise every kid a fish he is confident everyone will have a good time. Other events at the derby include a casting contest, water safety education, bait and fish identification, knot tying, and fishing techniques. They will also bring back the archery activity to shoot carp targets in the water which debuted last year. There are also fishing-related games for small children.
The National Wild Turkey Federation will again be hosting the Jakes Taking Aim Gallery. Volunteers with the National Wild Turkey Federation will help kids learn to safely use a pellet gun.
Other event sponsors include Bass Pro Shops, National Wild Turkey Federation, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Boy Scouts. "With the help of these partners, we are able to host a great event that gets kids excited about fishing," said Scott.
The event is limited to the first 75 kids to register. Registration is open now at the Forest Service Bedford Office or by calling 812.275.5987. Participants should be 15 years old or under and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (minimum of one adult per 3 children).
The derby begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 12:00, followed by a free cookout for everyone who attends, including adults. Tarzian Lake at the Maumee Boy Scout Camp is located in Jackson County north of Norman.
