(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indianapolis man faces a charge of rape in Monroe County in connection with a report of a sexual assault during a Halloween party last fall in downtown Bloomington.
Police say 21-year-old Devin Jordan Smith turned himself in to the Monroe County Jail on Wednesday.
DNA samples collected from a 19-year-old woman matched DNA samples submitted by Smith during the investigation, according to Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Joe Crider.
According to police, on or around November 1, 2015, the woman went to a Halloween party on the 300 block of North College Avenue. She reported being inappropriately touched and then sexually assaulted by an unknown male at the party.
The assault ended when a friend of the female's walked in and witnessed the assault. The man then left the party.
Detectives interviewed party-goers and were able to determine Smith as a suspect.
On or around November 9, 2015, a photo line-up that included Smith's photo was provided to the victim. She identified Smith as her alleged rapist.
Police obtained a DNA swab from Smith on November 20 and it watched with the DNA collected with the DNA from the woman's sexual assault examination kit.
Police obtained a warrant charging Smith with felony rape on March 23.
