(WORTHINGTON) - Police arrested 42-year-old James Sturgis after he allegedly received 29.23 grams of meth through the mail.
According to Greene County Police Det. James O'Malley on December 29, 2015 began investigating Sturgis on an alleged sex offense. During that investigation O'Malley says the alleged victim and an informant provided information that Sturgis was receiving packages through the mail that contained meth and drug paraphernalia from California.
Police then contacted the Worthington Post Office officials who confirmed Sturgis had received several packages over a period of several months.
The Worthington Post Master then requested the U.S. Postal Inspector to contact them when Sturgis received another package.
On March 29, the U.S. Postal Inspector contacted the Worthington post master stating a package was en route. After the package arrived at the U.S. Postal Inspector, the Worthington post master and Greene County K-9 Deputy Harvey Holt met at the post office.
"(The U.S. Postal Inspector) took possession of the suspect package and placed this package and four additional packages of similar size and shape. These packages were then subjected to inspection by the Greene County K-9 Deputy Holt and his narcotics dog, 'Layla.'"
The dog alerted to police of possible drugs in the package addressed to Sturgis.
Armed with a search warrant officials opened the package and inside was 29.23 grams of crystal meth.
The post office then contacted Sturgis to come pick up his package. He did on April 1 and was arrested on a Level 3 felony charge of possession of meth and a Class C misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Once in the police car, Sturgis wanted to make a deal.
"James (Sturgis) stated he would provide names of his suppliers and buyers of illegal drugs for leniency and said he was willing to work for law enforcement," O'Malley said.
Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw denied Sturgis a deal.
Later, a search warrant was issued for Sturgis' home where police found three more packages address to Sturgis from California. Inside was pipes, "tooters", spoons, and a partial syringe.
