(BEDFORD) - A Mitchell man was killed this morning in a crash on 16th Street.
According to a Bedford Police report, 79-year-old Joseph N. Tolbert of Mitchell was pronounced dead at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.
At about 9:51 a.m., witnesses told police that Tolbert was pulling out of the IU Health Bedford Hospital parking lot in a 2002 Ford Ranger and collided with a 2001 Ford F-350 traveling east on 16th Street.
The driver of the pickup truck, 70-year-old John Ulrey of Seymour, told police Tolbert pulled out directly into his path. Ulrey slammed on his brakes but was unable to avoid the collision.
Police say the front passenger side of Ulrey's truck collided with the driver's side of Tolbert's truck.
Two witnesses told police there was nothing Ulrey could have done to avoid the collision.
Bedford Police Jeremy Bridges attempted CPR on Tolbert. Tolbert was then transported by ambulance to the hospital.
At the hospital medical personnel attempted to revive Tolbert for several minutes before pronouncing him dead.
Medical personnel told police Tolbert was leaving the hospital after having blood tests. Officers also say Tolbert had
several fused neck vertebrae and could not turn his head, which possibly contributed to the collision.
Ulrey told police he was not injured at the scene and requested a ride to a local golf course to get a ride home from a family member. However on the way to the golf course, Ulrey said he was not feeling well and was taken to IU Health Bedford Hospital for blood pressure issues.
