(LINTON) - A Sandborn man is in Greene County Jail after allegedly fleeing from police Wednesday night.
37-year-old Matthew David Moore is facing preliminary charges of Level 5 felony habitual traffic offender, Level 6 felony possession of methamphetamine, Level 6 auto theft, Level 6 felony resisting law enforcement, Class A misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia, Class A misdemeanor resisting law enforcement and Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell told Sabrina Westfall of the Greene County Daily World that Officer Nick Yingling attempted to initiate a traffic stop at 8:13 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of North Main Street and F Street. Jerrell said the department received a tip about Moore driving the vehicle, and it was known his driving privileges had been revoked. But, instead of stopping, the vehicle fled and headed toward Fifth Street Northwest.
Moore then reportedly fled north on Fifth Street Northwest, which turns into County Road 1225 West.
The driver then wrecked the vehicle into the embankment at the intersection of CR 1225 West and CR 400 North as he failed to make the turn.
Chief Jerrell noted that he was unsure the rate of speeds reached in the incident, but they did exceed the speed limit.
After crashing into the embankment, Moore reportedly fled the scene on foot, but officers were able to apprehend him about 100 yards from the car.
No injuries were reported, and Moore was transported to the Linton Police Department for questioning before being booked into Greene County Jail.
During the course of the investigation, police learned the vehicle may be stolen.
Jerrell noted while the car was being inventoried, a device was located that caused concern.
"Upon inventory of his vehicle, there was a small device that looked like a homemade explosive-type device. So, the ISP (Indiana State Police) Explosive Techs were called, and they came down and disarmed it," Jerrell noted.
Jerrell said the case is still under investigation and may result in more charges.
Officer Yingling was assisted by Linton Police Officers Orry Phipps and Logan Hobbs.
