(DUBOIS CO.) - Everyone makes mistakes but the true sportsman admits when they have done wrong.
When 11-year-old Evan killed two turkeys with one shot Sunday, he along with his uncle Dwayne and cousin Dustin, did the right thing and called 1-800-TIP-IDNR to turn himself in.
After talking with Indiana Conservation Officer Boyd, Evan recalled an important part of his hunter education class. Once you squeeze the trigger you're responsible for that shot, and identify your target and what's beyond.
Any experienced turkey hunter will tell you that when those jakes or toms come running in they are often in a nice single file line.
Evan's excitement couldn't be contained and he shot the first bird within range. Unfortunately, when he checked two turkeys lay dead in the field.
Officer Boyd turned the incident into an educational moment. Evan was left with a warning for the error and a smile on his face because Officer Boyd let him keep his turkey.
