(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after leading Bedford Police officers on a pursuit early this morning.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, an officer stopped a vehicle after he noticed the vehicle had an expired license plate.
The traffic stopped occurred at 16th and H streets at 12:35 a.m.
"As the officer got out of their patrol car to approach the vehicle the driver sped away," Chief Parsley says.
The driver sped off heading east on 16th Street.
"The driver was swerving all over the road," Parsley added. "The pursuit then headed out U.S. 50 East."
Officers radioed to Lawrence County Police who were working on a fatal accident on U.S. 50 East.
"An officer from Lawrence County attempted to intercept the vehicle before it reached the fatal accident scene but the vehicle got past that officer," Chief Parsley says.
The driver then almost struck another LCPD officer that was direction traffic and two ambulances at the scene.
"He then swerved to miss the ambulances putting the vehicle in the ditch," Chief Parsley added. "He then bailed out of the vehicle and took off on foot."
Officers from Bedford and LCPD chased the man and after several commands for him to stop he was tazed.
"He continued to fight with police while they placed him in handcuffs," Chief Parsley says.
Officers arrested 38-year-old Richard Caswell of Bedford on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing in a vehicle, possession of a legend drug, resisting arrest by force, resisting arrest by fleeing, driving while his driver's license was suspended with a prior conviction, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, reckless driving, disregarding an officer directing traffic and was cited for expired license plate and false and fictitious registration.
The fatal accident on U.S. 50 is still under investigation by the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department. No information was available this morning as officers are still attempting to notify next of kin.
