(BLOOMINGTON) - WildCare Inc. is treating a baby crow that was assaulted by a group of boys using sticks to beat it. The fledgling is making progress and healing.
According to officials the infection that developed in the ruined eye seems to be clearing up.
The bird is missing several chunks from it's top beak, and the lower beak and jaw are so pulverized that they would not stand up to a surgical repair, but the alternative, gentle pressure re-alignment seems to be helping. Officials won't know for sure until after a couple of months of treatment, but there's a chance for a good recovery.
In the meantime, the baby bird is feeling better on pain medication, eating well and becoming more active every day.
This weekend the group released a Downy Woodpecker that struck a window earlier this spring.
It suffered a fairly significant impact injury and has been in rehabilitation for several weeks but is now healthy and was released.
For this active little woodpecker, a feeder hanging too close to a window became a hazard as well as a food source. Feeder placement can be very important, officials know you want to be able to see the beautiful birds that come to your feeder, but be mindful of hanging feeders far enough away that the windows you use for bird watching don't become dangerous for songbirds visiting.
