(BLOOMINGTON) - WildCare Inc. is treating a baby crow that was assaulted by a group of boys using sticks to beat it.
Officials say this year they have seen an increase of cruelty against wild animals, including multiple reports of a lawn care company that is intentionally chasing down animals and running over them with their mowers.
Officials have not yet been able to identify this company, but if you witness a crime against wildlife contact Indiana DNR Law Enforcement at (812) 837-9536.
WildCare Inc's most recent case involves a baby crow that was assaulted by a group of boys using sticks to beat it, while the crow's family screamed from the tree above the fledgling, trying to protect it.
A rescuer intervened and saved the crow, but officials are still unsure if the young bird will be able to make a recovery given the severity of its injuries.
Its blue eyes identify the fledgling as an American Crow as only a few weeks old, their eyes become darker when they're juveniles.
"This senseless act of violence against a defenseless animal is hard to understand," officials wrote on Facebook. "It makes it more heartbreaking when you understand how very intelligent American Crows are, and that this young bird's parents are grieving over the loss of a child in the same way we would. Teaching respect for the animals that share our planet and helping educate people on the diversity of species and how our ecosystem depends on these animals is part of our mission here at WildCare. Rather than becoming angry, we encourage everyone to share their love of wildlife with others, and spread the message of how important these animals are in keeping our planet habitable for all of us."
Officials will keep the public updated on this special patient's progress, but for now the baby American Crow is resting comfortably and receiving care and kindness while it recovers.''
