Last updated on Tuesday, June 7, 2016

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) has just released several data sets that will appear on the City’s website and will also be available to the public through the webpage for the White House Police Data Initiative.

At a news conference held on April 4, 2016, Mayor John Hamilton announced that the Bloomington Police Department would participate in the White House Police Data Initiative. T

his project was begun as part of the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing and as a way for law enforcement agencies to help increase trust and safety within their communities by being more transparent in how they conduct everyday business and in various police-citizen interactions.

Participating agencies are required to commit to providing a minimum of three (3) data sets, but the Bloomington Police Department has committed to providing ten (10) data sets.

Mayor Hamilton announced that those data sets would include:

The current data sets reflect information gathered through the first quarter of 2016.

It is anticipated that information in the respective data sets will be updated quarterly.

"We see the BPD ongoing data release as a vital component of our overall transparency initiative.  BPD is one of the first law enforcement agencies of its size to participate in the White House Data Initiative - something of which we should all be proud," commented Mayor Hamilton

"Proactively providing police data is a new way of doing business for many law enforcement agencies; in Bloomington we believe it is important for the public to have more information so that they have a better understanding how our officers interact with the community we serve," said Chief Michael Diekhoff.

The data sets can be found on the City's website through the BClear portal at:https://data.bloomington.in.gov/group/public-safety
