(BLOOMINGTON) - Edgewood Boys Basketball Coach David Mahurin has stepped down and is also resigned his academic and administrative positions at Edgewood High School.
51-year-old Mahurin, who was an assistant principal at the high school, was arrested May 7 on misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with endangerment and possession of marijuana. His case is pending.
Mahurin declined comment on the advice of counsel: "My attorney has asked me to make no comments about anything." Bloomington attorney Sam Shapiro is representing Mahurin in the matter.
Edgewood Athletic Director Mick Hammett posted the opening for a new coach for the Mustangs Tuesday afternoon.
The Richland-Bean Blossom School Corp. board suspended Mahurin for 10 days in the wake of his arrest, essentially carrying to the end of the school year, before Mahurin tendered his resignation Monday.
After coaching for two seasons at Adams Central, Mahurin, a Terre Haute native, led the South Vermillion program from 1995-2002. He achieved greater prominence at Rockville, where he compiled a record of 165-81, and won a semistate, a regional and two sectional championships. The 2012 semistate champions lost to Loogootee in the 2012 Class A championship game. Mahurin left Rockville in 2013. He took the Edgewood job starting with the 2014-15 season. Mahurin's teams have gone 30-20 in his two seasons guiding the Mustangs, including a recently-completed 18-9 campaign.
