(OOLITIC) - A Beech Grove man was arrested last week after he allegedly attempted to kidnap a 1-year-old girl.
Lawrence County police arrested 33-year-old Stephen Voils on charges of battery on a person under the age of 14 and kidnapping.
According to Sheriff Mike Branham, the incident happened on May 26 in the 900 block of Walnut Street in Oolitic.
When police received the call at 7:42 p.m. the caller told dispatch they had the man who was attempting to kidnap the child restrained.
Sheriff Branham says Voils was impaired and failed to give police his name. It took four days for police to identify Voils.
According to the father of the child, Voils had approached him and asked to hold the child. The father refused and picked up his child. As he did, Voils allegedly grabbed the girl by the leg and tried to pull her away. That's when the father's older child and a neighbor saw what was happening and subdued Voils until police arrived.
Sheriff Branham says Voils appeared to be having a mental breakdown or suffering from mental illness.
He was taken to crisis care and didn't tell officials who he was until four days later.
Voils was released from crisis care Tuesday and taken to the Lawrence County Jail where he is being held on a $20,000 surety and $2,005 cash bond.
