(MOORESVILLE) - The death of a Mooresville man whose body was recovered Thursday night from Echo Lake, west of Mooresville, is under investigation by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana Conservation Officers.
An autopsy performed Friday determined 39-year-old Richard M. Schmidt died as a result of drowning, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
A full toxicology report is pending.
Schmidt's body was recovered from the lake along with his vehicle about 11 p.m. Thursday. Schmidt was reported missing by his family earlier that day. .
According to a press release, Schmidt was last seen by his girlfriend the previous evening. His sister, who lives next to Echo Lake, called police after seeing an oil slick on the surface of the water.
Divers from the Morgan County Water Rescue Team responded to the scene and found Schmidt and his vehicle.
Officers says it is unknown how or why Schmidt drove his vehicle into the lake.
