(SPRINGVILLE) - A fire early this morning destroyed the old Springville gymnasium.
At 12:52 a.m. a Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighter reported heavy black smoke in the area of the Old Springville Gym.
Soon Perry, Marshall, Oolitic, Shawswick and Indian Creek VFDs responded along with TOPES.
When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting 100 to 150 feet in the air.
Perry VFD Chief Max Peters says it took everyone and more than 100,000 gallons of water to bring the fire to an end.
It took firefighters until around 5 a.m. to get a handle on the fire.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the kitchen area but that will be determined after the finding of the state fire marshal who was on the scene this morning.
Bob Phillips, Perry Township and pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Springville, says today is a sad day for Springville.
"I am saddened to tears seeing the pictures of the fire," he added.
