(MITCHELL) - Organizers are preparing for the Sixth Annual Hillbilly 500 on Saturday, August 6.
If it rains the day of the event, it will be held on Sunday, August 7.
The Mitchell Lions Club, who organizes the event, says the focus is on helping children this year - the goal is to provide for children in need. Larry Hardman, who helps organize the event, says the Lions Club has secured a room at Hatfield Elementary School to keep clothing for children in need.
The club will be accepting clothing donations from kids in kindergarten through second grade.
But those attending and participating are asked to donate canned goods for Bertha's Mission.
Those participating will race their homemade jalopies down a 500-foot slope on Teke Burton Drive, starting at the railroad overpass near Orchard Street.
Last year, race entries were down with only 21 drivers. But with a few out-of-state entries, from places like Kentucky and Illinois, in addition to local racers, organizers are hoping the turnout is better this year.
There will be refreshments for purchase at the event. All of the food will be sold by local groups and businesses. Some of the food vendors include the Mitchell Wesleyan Church, Mitchell High School baseball team and Phi Beta Psi.
There will also be a flea market with local arts and crafts vendors.
Other vendors who want a spot at the race can sign up for $10, by calling (812) 508-1319.
