(BLOOMINGTON) - The 28th annual Salsa Contest will be Saturday during the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market.
The judging will be 10 a.m. at the Showers Plaza at City Hall.
Market visitors can taste salsa while supplies last and also try salsa made by Bivis Tamales. There will also be a salsa making demonstration by Chef Seth Elgar from No Coast Reserve at 10:15 a.m. and Salsa Dance demonstration and party presented in cooperation with Arthur Murray Dance Studio.
There's still time for people to enter the Salsa Contest. Purchase a packet for $5 at Bloomingfoods East, 3220 E. Third St., or Bloomingfoods Near West Side, 316 W. Sixth St. Packets must be returned to one of the Bloomingfoods locations no later than 8 p.m. Friday. Packets include an entry form with space to include the recipe, a recipe card, two 16-ounce containers for salsa and a bag to place them in.
First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories. The cook or a representative must be present at the Saturday event by 11 a.m. to win. The categories are tomato-based raw, tomato-based cooked and specialty and all must be handmade with fresh ingredients -- no additives, preservatives, artificial flavors or processed sauces allowed. There is a limit of one entry per category per person.
New produce at the market, open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Showers Complex, will include Gala and Jonathan apples, munchkin pumpkins and sweet potatoes. Other produce available will include celery, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, chili peppers, collards, cucumbers, canary melon, apples, arugula, asparagus, basil, beans, red and golden beets, blueberries, bok choi, broccoli, lettuce, kohlrabi, kale, ground cherries, greens, green onions, green beans, gooseberries, garlic, fresh herbs, fennel, fava beans, eggplant, edible flowers, dry beans, dried tomatoes, shallots, Swiss chard, sweet corn, sunflower shoots, squash, spaghetti squash, yellow crookneck squash, pattypan squash, acorn squash, spinach, salad mix, radishes, purslane, pumpkins, potatoes, popping corn, plums, peppers, peaches, peas, okra, new potatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, wheatgrass, watermelon, turnips and tomatoes.
Vendors will also be selling bedding plants, bouquets, dried flowers, perennial plants, sunflowers, vegetable plants, beeswax candles, essential oils, jewelry, knitted goods, soaps, lip balms, woven clothing, bee pollen, caramel, cheese, cornmeal, eggs, hickory rubs, honey, jams, jellies, maple syrup, marinades, beef, bison, chicken, duck, lamb, pork, turkey, pet milk, spice mixes, teas, vinegars, wine, worm castings, compost and fertilizer.
