(BLOOMFIELD) - The Bloomfield Public Library main branch is planning renovations to the building which will include re-paving the parking lot, new carpeting throughout both levels of the library as well as new furniture, according to Library Director Austin Stroud.
Kelly Slaven of the Greene County Daily World reports, due to these upcoming renovations, the main branch in Bloomfield will be temporarily closed mid-September for approximately one week--exact dates to be announced.
A grant received will also go towards computers and video equipment to help update the library, especially as many locals heavily utilize the available computer access offered there. The internet service at the library will also be updated to allow faster and easier access on library computers.
The library board recognized and discussed how the public often utilizes the internet access at the library, and say they may allow laptops to be checked out during the week of closure.
The renovations will also include moving furniture in order to roll down the new carpeting. Volunteers are encouraged to help and can attend a Friends of the Library meeting to find out more information.
The current furniture in the library is around twenty years old, according to Stroud. The old furniture will either be auctioned or sold to benefit the renovations of the library. Wooden furniture will most likely be kept. Details will be finalized at the next Friends of the Library meeting.
The library board encourages the community to visit the library and check out several books to help ease the burden of moving so much furniture and books. Returns cannot be accepted inside the library during the week of closure.
An upcoming event Sept. 1-15 will offer free material for everyone. The end of this free book event will result in materials unsold being removed or donated. The event is meant to give those interested a chance to score free reading material while easing the amount to be moved during the renovation.
The library itself is not currently accepting donations, and encourages donations to be taken to Goodwill, Salvation Army or Hoosier Hills Food Bank which holds a giant book sale at the upcoming Apple Festival on the first full weekend of October.
Starting Aug, 19, those who want first choice can now become a member of Friends of the Library at the newly discounted price of $10 and have earlier access than the public to choose books from the sale carts. To become a member, simply visit the front desk.
Flyers posted throughout the library encourage entire shelves to be checked out starting Aug. 29 through Sept.16.
Some job openings are available at the library as well. Robert Axe attended the monthly meeting who worked with the library for ten years and expressed interest in an open position.
Axe affirmed his interest and passion for the library quoting Harry S. Truman, saying " Not all readers are leaders, but most leaders are readers."
