(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Urban Enterprise Association Thursday voted to lend support to five local nonprofit organizations.
Checks of $1,000 were presented to the Bedford Lions Club's ramp program, the Success and Opportunity At Reading adult literacy project, Becky's Place, Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor and Bertha's Mission.
This move comes in the wake of BUEA's recent decision to donate $25,000 to fund a BUEA scholarship through the Bedford North Lawrence Scholarship Foundation.
The BUEA's mission is to proactively serve community needs through collaboration, education, communication, beautification and community development by partnering with local, regional and state stakeholders.
The board also decided to permit the Indiana Trails Group use of the old CSX Depot, previously utilized as a recycling center for the Lawrence County Solid Waste District. Indiana Trails Group wants to use the depot as a storage site for equipment and materials it uses to build and maintain the Milwaukee Trail.
A proposed agreement allows the group to lease the structure for $1 a year while taking on the responsibility of replacing the roof and removing any contaminants.
A private group has expressed interest in the Elks Lodge, recently gifted to BUEA, which has spend $70,000 to stabilize the building to avoid further damage.
