(MITCHELL) - Five people were injured when a truck struck a tree on Mill Creek Road Saturday night.
According to a Lawrence County Police report the accident happened at 8:19 p.m.
Police say 19-year-old Ashlan King of Huron was driving west on Mill Creek Road in a 1995 Dodge Dakota. As the truck went downhill and rounded a curve, King hit the brakes but they failed to work.
The truck went off the roadway and struck a tree head-on, throwing three of the people who were riding in the bed of the truck out of the vehicle.
King suffered internal chest pain and was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.
17-year-old Josh Sims of Mitchell was thrown from the truck bed and possibly broke a bone in his left leg. He was taken to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
14-year-old Kalib Riley of Mitchell and 20-year-old Jason T. Jones of Vincennes were also in the bed of the truck.
Riley suffered a possible broken bone to his left ankle and Jones complained of pain to his ribs and abdomen. Riley was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and Jones was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
16-year-old Zach Riley of Mitchell, who was riding in the cab of the truck, suffered abrasions and contusions to the left side of his head. He was taken to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
Assisting at the scene were an IU Health Bedford Hospital ambulance, Marion Township Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department extrication unit and Air Evac.
