(LOOGOOTEE) - A report of a “man with a gun” led to the lockdown of both the Loogootee Elementary and High School today.
Martin County Sheriff's Department received a call around 11:40 a.m. from what sounded like a student reporting a man with a gun at 101 Costello Drive - the address of the elementary school.
School officials and police were notified immediately.
"The elementary and the high school both went into lockdowns," Loogootee Police Chief Kelly Rayhill says.
Officers from both the Martin County Sheriff's Department and Loogootee responded to the scene.
Sheriff Travis Roush says officers searched the elementary school, parking lots and then the junior-senior high before giving the all clear.
"This was a false alarm," Roush added. "We are actively trying to trace down the 911 call. Whoever made the call did it as a prank and that is a serious offense."
Assisting at the scene were Loogootee Police, Martin County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police and Indiana Conservation Officers and helped clear the buildings.
