(BOONVILLE) - Mathew McCallister was found guilty in the shooting death of a Martinsville man at a power plant has been sentenced to life without parole.
A Warrick County judge on Tuesday sentenced 34-year-old McCallister after a jury convicted him of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in less than two hours on February 17, 2014, in the slaying of 35-year-old Joseph Nelson of Martinsville.
Nelson's body was found in a load of coal at the Alcoa Warrick Operations along the Ohio River just east of Evansville.
The state sought the life sentence because McCallister was on parole when the slaying occurred.
McCallister was one of four people convicted in connection with the slaying. Also arrested were 25-year-old Shawn Grigsby of Evansville; 30-year-old David John Lackey, Jr., and 22-year-old Jade Nicole Stigall.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Stigall was with Nelson on February 17, 2014 at a Fairfield Inn hotel in Evansville when Stigall told police Nelson had made her feel uncomfortable and she called the other men. They all drove to a location in northern Warrick County. There, according to police, Nelson was made to kneel with his hands behind his back near a railroad track and was shot once in the head. His body was then dumped into a coal car that went to the Alcoa Plant in Warrick County and was later found in a coal-handling system at Alcoa's generating plant.
