Last updated on Friday, August 5, 2016

(MITCHELL) - The Sixth Annual Hillbilly 500 is Saturday.

The race begins at noon. Racers can register the day of the event starting at 9 a.m.

The Mitchell Lions Club, who organizes the event, says the focus is on helping children this year.

Those participating will race their homemade jalopies down a 500-foot slope on Teke Burton Drive, starting at the railroad overpass near Orchard Street. This year, the event will boast a new ramp, built by Charles Cessna.

Racers are coming from coming from Illinois and Kentucky to join local favorites.

If it rains the day of the event it will be held on Sunday.

Larry Hardman, who helps organize the event, says the focus this year is to help others.

Those participating and viewing the race are asked to bring donations of canned goods for Bertha's Mission. Officials have also been gathering children's clothing to give to children in need. The Lions Club is working with Hatfield Elementary School to get a room at the school where clothes can be kept for children who need them.

There will also be local food, crafts and yard-sale vendors. Food vendors include the Mitchell Wesleyan Church, Mitchell High School baseball team and Phi Beta Psi.

Vendor spaces are still available for $10.
