(BLOOMINGTON) - A broken water main Friday flooded the warehouse of St. Vincent de Paul in Bloomington and prompted the early dismissal of classes at Tri-North Middle School.
Jon Callahan, public affairs specialist for the City of Bloomington Utilities, says it is not known what caused a 16-inch water main to split or how many of gallons flooded the area.
The break happened at the intersection of 17th and Jackson streets where a private contractor was working on a stormwater infrastructure improvement project.
Water from the main inundated the nearby warehouse, where St. Vincent de Paul stores furniture it distributes to individuals and families in need. There was six-inches of water throughout the 6,000-square-foot warehouse.
There was thousands of dollars in furniture, carpet, computers and other pieces of electronic equipment damaged.
The offices for Bloomington Affordable Self Storage, located in the same building as the warehouse, also had water damage, but the storage units themselves were not affected since they are located elsewhere, on higher ground.
Tri-North Middle School dismissed classes around 9:30 a.m., when water to the building was shut off because of the water main break. The water was off for about 2.5 hours as crews from the utility and the private contractor replaced about 20 feet of the water main.
