How Family Stress Can Lead to Violence

(PAOLI) - Family stress can be caused by a variety of other factors, including parental relationship issues, financial troubles and health-related challenges.

Research shows this stress can have a profound impact on a child's life and last a lifetime. In some cases, emotions boil over and lead to physical violence. Research compiled in the Indiana Youth Institute's (IYI) 2016 KIDS COUNT in Indiana Data Book shows that children who witness violence between their parents are at a greater risk for negative outcomes including behavioral problems, difficulty in school, and being future victims and perpetrators of domestic violence as adults.

IYI and IU Health Paoli are hosting an educational forum to take a closer look at the stress factors that can lead to violence and how to intervene. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, at Super Burger, 600 West Main Street in Paoli.

The event will feature the film "I Never Meant," which depicts a day in the life of a family. The film shows how family stress can build and lead to domestic violence. Brian Carter with Prevent Child Abuse Indiana will lead a group discussion following the film, focusing on prevention, intervention and local resources to support youth workers, caregivers and families.
