(SALEM) - The Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a Washington County Detention Center Inmate. According to police, 40-year-old Travis Doan of Hardinsburg hung himself in his cell on Monday evening.
Doan was booked into the jail on August 29 on charges of a writer of attachment. At approximately 5 p.m. Monday, the Washington County Sheriff's Department contacted the Indiana State Police and requested assistance with an inmate that was found deceased inside of a jail cell.
Washington County Sheriff Roger Newlon requested ISP detectives and ISP Crime Scene Investigators handle the investigation.
An autopsy was performed Tuesday and preliminary autopsy results showed death by hanging by ligature. Toxicology reports are pending.
Police did not say what Doan used to hang himself.
