(MITCHELL) - Kara Parkes was crowned the 70th Annual Persimmon Festival queen.
Parkes, the daughter of Kim and Kerry Parkes, will be a 10-year 4-H'er next summer. She is the treasurer of the Lawrence County Junior Leaders and 4-H Council.
On Saturday, she will celebrate her 18th birthday by riding on a float through the streets of Mitchell wearing her sash and crown.
Parkes is a senior at Mitchell High School. She is on the academic team, student council, art club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, SADD and National Honor Society. She also manages the football team.
Parkes plans to attend Purdue University after graduation to study engineering.
Her court is first-runner up Emily Dalton, Miss Congeniality Linda Jamison and six princesses: Breanna Taflinger, Alyssa Mahan, Hanna Pugh, London Brooking, Morgan Taylor and Taylor Gaines.
Two of the princesses tied, and the judges felt strongly about keeping both in the court, so an additional princess was added to the lineup.
