(LOOGOOTEE) - A Loogootee man was arrested Wednesday after driving intoxicated, crashing into a charter bus and then fleeing the scene.
At 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police were called to a car-bus accident at the intersection of County Roads 120 East and 725 North, just north of West Boggs Lake.
While enroute to the scene Senior Trooper Jarrod Lents and Master Trooper Gaven Wilson were told that the driver of a Chevrolet Impala involved in the crash after having held changing a flat tire, fled the scene.
The bus driver was able to obtain the vehicle's license plate number before the driver left.
Troopers attempted to locate the vehicle checking the area of the accident at the driver's home.
A short time later, Trooper Lents saw the Chevrolet on County Road 1200 East near County Road 440 North. Lents blocked the road with his emergency lights on and ordered the driver out of the car.
As Lents assisted the driver, 51-year-old David K. O'Brien of Loogootee, out of the vehicle, he immediately was able to determine O'Brien had been drinking.
O'Brien was bleeding from his arm as a result of the crash; Lents administered first aid by applying bandages to the wound.
Then arrested O'Brien and transported him to Daviess County Hospital for a blood-draw. O'Brien had a blood alcohol content of 0.31 percent, almost four times the legal limit.
He was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an injury accident and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Indiana State Police continues to encourage motorists to dial 911 and report any suspected reckless or impaired driving. The most effective way to prevent crashes from impaired driving is to simply not drive impaired; however, law enforcement will continue to strive to effectively partner with communities to do everything possible to keep our roadways safe.
