(IRELAND) - The Ireland Volunteer Fire Department battled a silo fire Monday morning around 9:40 a.m. at the Kenneth Vogel Farm at 550 West and Kessner Bridge Road.
Upon arrival crews found smoke emitting from the top of the stone block silo.
Vogel told firefighter he discovered the fire around 9:30 a.m. after smelling smoke, then seeing it coming from the top of the silo.
A dozen firefighters and three trucks from Ireland Volunteer Fire Department responded along with Jasper firefighters with a ladder truck.
Firefighters says the silo was filled about halfway with wheat that started to burn after what they believe was spontaneous combustion. The silo wheat had been in the silo for about two months.
Vogel told firefighters the wheat is insured, but the silo which was not damaged was not insured.
