(MITCHELL) - Mitchell police officers will receive a pay increase.
The Mitchell City Council voted on an 8 percent pay raise that will take effect at the beginning of the year.
During a special meeting at Mitchell City Hall, the council approved the 2017 salary ordinance. The ordinance also grants a 4 percent pay hike to all other city workers, including the mayor and clerk-treasurer, a 4-percent pay hike.
The pay for firefighters or lifeguards was not increased. The city council compensation also remains unchanged.
The Times Mail reports that the council also made changes due to the Fair Labor Standards Act which, beginning December 1, requires that overtime be paid to all salary employees who do not make at least $47,476.
Positions that are salaried now will become hourly beginning December 1.
The city will now only have four salaried positions: the mayor, clerk-treasurer, water and sewer superintendent and police chief.
