(BEDFORD) - A Springville man was arrested Sunday after he inhaled toxic vapors and crashed his vehicle into some trees.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, 21-year-old Codie Lee Austin Hamm then fled the scene and left two injured passengers in his vehicle.
The accident happened on Fifth Street at 7:21 p.m.
"The passengers in the vehicle told police Hamm stopped and bought a can of air duster and was inhaling it while he was driving on Fifth Street near GM Drive," Parsley added. "Hamm told his passengers he suddenly couldn't see and crashed in the tree."
Two juvenile girls and a 1-year-old were also in the vehicle.
According to police the vehicle went off the left side of the road, over an embankment and struck some trees near the intersection of E Street and Bailey Scales Road.
Hamm then fled on foot. Parsley says Hamm then got a ride to a home in Orleans where he was later arrested on charges of fleeing the scene of an accident, public intoxication, inhaling toxic vapors, criminal recklessness and driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction.
He is being held in the Lawrence County Jail without bond because he was out on bond at the time of this arrest.
Both girls in the vehicle were injured and taken to hospitals because they suffered cuts to their heads. Their names are not being released because it is an ongoing investigation and the girls are juveniles.
The Department of Child Services was also notified.
