(BEDFORD) - An Indianapolis man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend during a domestic fight Saturday.
Bedford Police arrested 35-year-old Ismael Ortiz on charges of battery with a deadly weapon and domestic battery in the presence of a minor. He is being held in the Lawrence County Jail on a $20,000 surety or $2,005 cash bond.
Police were called to the 1700 block of O Street just before noon after a report of a domestic fight.
Bedford Assistant Chief Joe DeWees says the caller reported they heard Ortiz say he was going to stab the woman.
Before police arrived, Ortiz fled to Indianapolis in a vehicle with his 2-year-old son.
Police say the toddler witnessed the stabbing.
"We then requested other police agencies to be on the lookout for Mr. Ortiz's vehicle," Assistant Chief DeWees says. "Within minutes, Morgan and Monroe County Sheriff's deputies located Ortiz and held him. We sent an officer to Martinsville to arrest him."
Once he was in custody, Ortiz told police that his girlfriend was suicidal and she cut herself, but that doesn't match up with what witnesses and the woman reported.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital where she received stitches to close the injury.
