(BEDFORD) - A Bedford teen was injured and the driver fled the scene early Sunday morning.
According to a Lawrence County Police report, a resident on Rabbitsville Road near Stevens Lane reported hearing a loud boom and a car horn. They went to the scene and found a male in need of medical attention.
When police arrived they found 16-year-old Dayton Shaw of Bedford, who was a back seat passenger, with extensive injuries. An ambulance and first responders were alerted along with a medical helicopter.
Shaw was taken by ambulance to IU Health Hospital with substantial injuries and then flown from there to Methodist Hospital for treatment.
Police learned that 17-year-old Christopher Burris of Bedford was driving the vehicle, but had fled the scene along with another passenger, Josh McGill.
According to police Burris was traveling south on Rabbitsville Road at a high-rate of speed when he lost control of the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix. The car skid off the east side of the road and the back passenger side of the car hit a utility pole while the front end ran up a dirt embankment. The car then spun and came to rest several feet past the utility pole.
Burris was later found at a family member's home.
Police obtained a search warrant for a blood draw and found Burris had been drinking. The report states "the driver is being charged accordingly".
Burris was taken to Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center pending a court hearing.
