(NASHVILLE) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fall from a tree stand that injured a Charlestown man.
47-year-old Timothy C. Rutar fell approximately 12 feet and suffered from a broken femur.
Rutar was on private property in Nashville and was attempting to remove a lock-on style tree stand that had been in a tree for the past 15 years to replace it with a ladder stand. He was using climbing steps that were attached to the tree by nylon straps. After reaching the lock-on stand, the top strap broke causing the climbing steps to disengage from the tree and Rutar to fall to the ground.
Rutar was able to contact his wife by cell phone, who in turn contacted the Brown County Sheriff's Department.
Brown County Sheriff Deputies, Nashville Police, and Columbus Regional Hospital EMS were able to locate Rutar and carry him out of the wooded area. Lifeline helicopter transported Rutar to Methodist Hospital for treatment.
Rutar had a safety harness with him at the time of the incident but did not have it on.
