(BLOOMINGTON) - Nonprofit leaders and local government officials broke ground Monday afternoon on a new apartment complex for people experiencing chronic homelessness.
According to a press released, LIFEDesigns, a Bloomington-based nonprofit that works with individuals with disabilities, with additional funding from the state, is building the second installment of the Crawford Homes project adjacent to the first Crawford complex at 2440 S. Henderson Street
Crawford Homes, which opened in 2013, has 25 furnished apartments for Shalom Center clients who have experienced long-term homelessness and need wrap-around services to become self-sufficient. Crawford residents also received employment training and placement, daily living skills instruction, counseling, case management, addictions counseling and other services.
In its first year, Crawford residents increased their income by 29 percent, reduced incarcerations by 88 percent and reduced emergency room use by 65 percent, according to a news release.
Crawford II will offer 35 secure and furnished one-bedroom apartments for chronically homeless individuals or couples. The $7.4 million building project will also be LEED-certified for leadership in energy and environmental design.
