(BEDFORD) - Come enjoy a free Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Bertha’s Mission on Saturday, November 19 at First Baptist Church.
The meal will be served from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the church located at 1515 20th Street.
Janice Nickeo-Pendergrass, director of the mission, wants everyone to savor the flavors of turkey with all the trimmings. She is expecting to serve between 700 to 800 hungry folks.
"We want everyone to come join in fellowship with us, we will have live music and praise dance performance and a silent auction," says Nickeo-Pendergrass.
Twenty turkeys, 20 hams and dozens of cans of green beans and corn will be consumed. Volunteers will prepare 14 different dishes for the annual free meal for anyone who wants to partake of it.
The community has been very generous with several churches and groups organizing food drives. American Rental and Rural King, Dive Christian Church, Bedford Veterinary Medical Centre, Gulletts Creek Baptist Church, Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene and Bartlettsville Christian Church collected food. In addition, several churches and groups donated money for the dinner.
Among those pitching in are the clients and staff of Bedford Veterinary Medical Centre on Oolitic Road. The animal hospital is giving away doses of flea medicine to clients who bring in food for Bertha's Mission. The value of the NexGard flea medicine is $20 so officials are asks that food donations be comparable to that. Donations will be accepted until next Friday.
The food drives make the community dinner less of a financial strain on Bertha's Mission. But they still need donations of turkeys, hams, shredded cheese, elbow macaroni and butter.
Smokin' Jim's helps out by smoking most of the turkeys and some of the hams. First Baptist Church will provide 60 desserts and Empress Court the sweet potatoes.
